Lizzie Hopley writes the second story, and if that makes you suspect it’ll be a spooky one, you’d be right! Rix has gotten wind of a haunted hotel at a northern seaside town, and dragged Bambera out to investigate. Why exactly Bambera agreed, I don’t know. Savarin doesn’t accompany them, getting a small over-the-phone cameo, probably because his normal role would be keeping peace between Rix and Bambera, and we don’t want that here. Rix thinks that something paranormal is going on. Bambera, despite being head of UNIT, is certain it’s a hoax. Herein lies the conflict. In fact, it’s slightly absurd how much Bambera argues, given that she could leave any time, or even order Rix to leave. Of course, because this is a Doctor Who story, it’s not a hoax, but nor is it clear exactly what it is. The Doctor would build a doohickey to figure it out, but this UNIT is stuck with 1990s technology – Rix needs an Internet cafe to do online research, which is a nice touch. The other thing that makes it different is that we really don’t care about the how or the why; we’re just gonna make things spooky. I’m sure there are some small details from Rix’s or Bambera’s lives that you can glean from their fears, but I’m not that meticulous about it.
