This one is also pretty easy to place, given what we know of Jack: It takes place on Earth, in the year after “The Parting of the Ways.” Jack doesn’t yet realize that he’s immortal, so he’s mostly trying to keep his head down and live a quiet life. He’s also more than a little bitter that the Doctor and Rose didn’t come back for him. However, Guy Adams keeps Jack out of the story for large chunks of it, instead following Silo Crook, a reporter trying to revive the concept of journalism, who seeks out Jack to get his story (which Jack doesn’t want to provide). Jack, Silo, and Silo’s friend Malfi get caught up in an organ-harvesting plot, because even after the world has ended, there will still be horrible, wealthy people who do awful things because they can. This gives Jack ample opportunity to consider what a hero is, whether it’s based on words or actions, and whether he wants to be one going forward.
