Death in Geneva

UNIT #2.2
Released: 30 June 2016
Listened: 4/4/23
Based on the events of the previous story, Kate fears an information leak in the UK government, and tries going over their heads by going physically to Geneva. After Osgood’s experience in the last story, Kate takes her along for safety. Which turns out to be a terrible idea. The bad guys are in Geneva too, and we learn that they’re the Kamishi, and specifically that the things that sound like space-ninjas are in fact space-ninjas called Tengobushi. Their leader, Dokan, is played by Dan Li, with a Japanese accent that’s not quite as stereotypical as I remember from my first listen, but the whole thing combined makes the Kamishi seem borderline inappropriate. Speaking of accents, we meet the head of UNIT, General Grant Avery, played with a decent American accent by Harry Ditson. Credit where it’s due: I thought there was something fishy with Avery as soon as he was introduced, but there’s a swerve there that makes it non-obvious. Osgood gets nearly murdered a couple of times (again), to the point where she’s only surviving because her name is in the credits. Josh gets to do some decent soldiering, commanding actual troops instead of just rushing in to do things himself, so that’s good. The change of pace and setting is pretty nice, and I can see the attempt at some political intrigue, but it’s let down by the bad guys being inscrutable.
