The story of Ysalus continues, at least as a pawn in the larger game. Even though it was time-locked in the previous story, someone has broken the seal, and although none of the characters from there recur, there’s now a resistance, or at least a call for a resistance, trying to raise a standard against the Time Lords. For their part, the Time Lords are continuing the slide into cruelty; they’ve now decided to destroy the planet completely, to deny the Daleks the resources. Romana and Narvin can’t stop it, but they at least want to evacuate the population, and send Eris back five years to get it done. There’s a certain amount of timey-wimey going on here, in which Eris goes back on this mission specifically because we’re told that he did, five years later. Some of what’s going on there may yet be revealed, but at the least Eris has developed a strong distaste for what the Time Lords are willing to do in the war. As much as I’m tired of exasperated Romana, at least genocide is something appropriate for her to be exasperated about. Unfortunately, because we know where this all ends up, there’s a strong sense that things aren’t going to go well at all for Romana and friends.
