The last of the Tenth and River stories is a bit of a mind-bender by Jonny Morris. The Doctor meets River on the “most haunted planet in the galaxy,” known for its graveyards and ghosts. But of course that can’t be all that’s going on, and there’s almost nothing I can reveal without ruining it. What’s especially wonderful about this one is that the Doctor and River trust one another a lot more than previously. They’re both keeping secrets, and they each know the other has a good reason for that, but aside from that, there’s a level of trust. As a result, they’re more companionable than elsewhere, even more so than the Eleventh Doctor, because the Doctor believes they’ve come to an understanding. The dialog between the two is sharp, but neither has the upper hand. They’re just working on a mystery together, and it’s always fun to see the Tenth Doctor working something out in his head. On the whole, this boxed set is great for its special place in their relationship, where they can be mostly honest with one another. There aren’t any plans to do more of these, but I certainly wouldn’t object.
