UNIT: Brave New World #2.1
Released: 8 December 2022
Listened: 3/27/23
The second boxed set is called “Visitants,” although it’s not clear from the first story why that is. It’s by new writer Tajinder Singh Hayer, and it’s a slower-paced story with a smaller focus. The US military has some new tech that they’d like UNIT to evaluate, so Bambera, Savarin, and Rix (with nobody else, apparently) are on a US Air Force base to investigate. Ostensibly, they’re evaluating some new robots, which aren’t really combat-ready yet. However, Colonel Hagen, the head of the project, has something else in mind, a method of forcing unit cohesion. Hagen is played by American David Menkin, and he sounds much more like a techbro sales guy than an Air Force Colonel. If anything, the story’s a bit basic; it’s pretty obvious what the big revelations are going to be, to the point where I was waiting for them to get on with it. I didn’t expect the focus to stay small; I kept assuming the scene would broaden out, but it never happened. Still, there’s some good character work done between our three leads.
