This second story is unrelated to the first, pretty-much a stand-alone adventure. In fact, it had been scheduled for spots in other boxed sets before ending up here. There’s a base under siege, something is going on that nobody understands, and the Doctor has to do a clever extra-dimensional thing to save everyone. That much is fairly standard. However, there’s evidence that the Doctor and Valerie are beginning to work together as a team. The banter is thick and fast, so credit to Angus Dunican for that, and Jacob Dudman and Safiyya Ingar sell it quite nicely. The fact that Valerie is from the future and has her own level of tech-tinkering skills helps, as she can contribute to the solution in a more direct way. Valerie also gets her own love interest, or at least the beginnings of one. But she’s still figuring out what she wants from her new travel experience, so that’s complicating.
