This set is called “Hidden Depths,” and this first story takes that very literally. The Doctor arrives on Titan, which has methane rain, a vast sea of water under an icy crust, and yes, a human colony. Except, oops, it’s failing because starships no longer run on the hydrocarbons the colony supplies. Diana Hendry is conducting undersea research anyway, looking for life, when the Doctor drops in. And they certainly do find life; life that’s been there a lot longer than the humans, and really didn’t want to be disturbed. And they’re spoiled on the front cover, but I won’t do it here, because it’s fun if you don’t know who they are. Lizabeth Myles keeps the drama pretty much political, with humans who appear to be selfish, but can surprise you when it really comes down to it. There’s tension, but the story isn’t really long enough for the plot to get too advanced.
