Armageddon

UNIT #1.4: Armageddon

UNIT #1.4

Released: 9 November 2015

Listened: 4/3/23

Lots of shooting and explosions in this ending. It’s perhaps inevitable that you’d want your first boxed set to end with a pitched battle, but since UNIT is fixed in time and place, they can’t keep threatening the planet in every set. Still, you can get away with it the first time. So we’ve got UNIT troops fighting Autons in London, and all over the world. Of course, the key to the whole thing is at Devlin’s headquarters, where Kate, Josh, and Jacqui are all stuck from last episode. Devlin uses a rather nasty process to line Josh’s skeleton with plastic, and threatens to do so to Kate. This is quite painful, but also has the effect of letting the Nestenes control your mind. Of course, you’d only need to coat the skull if your goal is mind-control, but this way we get a super-strong UNIT operative for use in future stories. Jacqui really doesn’t handle all this well. Like, at all. Admittedly, UNIT plans to stage a global cover-up and Jacqui’s a journalist, so who’s to say she’s wrong? It’s big, it’s loud, but it doesn’t really hinge on anybody being particularly clever, just folks doing their jobs. On the whole, it makes for a competent first boxed set, and establishes some characters you’d like to see more of.
