This story is the big ending to the large arc of this boxed set, and as you would expect, it’s got a decent amount of slam-bang. Big Finish doesn’t always do that with their finales, but since this was the first Ninth Doctor boxed set, it makes sense that they would. However, it’s not just a good guys / bad guys smash-up. The Doctor realizes that he’s gotten something very wrong, even more wrong than he originally thought, and there are consequences to that. Fortunately, he’s got a bunch of friends to help. Our British army officers are still around, as is Dan Starkey’s hilarious Roman legionary, who basically only has one battle plan…which admittedly worked well for the Romans, so hey. And the resolution isn’t a matter of “defeating” anybody, which is appropriate for this war-weary Doctor, but does let down all the chaos that led up to it, a little. It’s also got the whole timey-wimey thing where they run through the plot again, but in the correct order this time, so you can see all the bits you didn’t understand the first time around. As a whole-box story, this one holds together pretty well; Nick Briggs brought his A game.
