This story is by Sophie Iles, superfan, and takes very good advantage of the short trip format. It’s told from the point of view of a family of aliens fleeing the destruction of their home planet, and being rescued by the Doctor after their ship crashes. In that kind of format, seeing the Doctor from the outside, he looks kind of insane. While the Twelfth Doctor is kind of cranky, he’s already starting to mellow, and when he’s being legitimately helpful, he’s more useful than his two predecessors being motor-mouthed and trying to distract everybody from danger. Dan Starkey reads this one, and although he does a pretty good Twelfth Doctor, there’s no need for his particular talents. It’s a small story, and works nicely that way.
