The follow-up story continues the Doctor’s arc. Jackie is treated to a private zeppelin ride to the high-end resort town of…Hull (different universe, right?). Rose and Pete have tricked the Doctor into going along, in the hopes that he and Jackie will resolve their differences, which frankly sounds like a terrible plan, but it happens to work. Specifically, it works because a Jackie from another universe turns up, one who’s much brighter and more successful than our Jackie, but also bent on murdering people and taking over. This lets the Doctor act more like himself, or rather the Doctor he wants to be, and also forces Jackie to confront her own faults. On the one hand, I’m not sure this story really needed two parts with two separate perils, but the Doctor deserves a little space for his redemption. But it’s also kind of hard to listen to this Doctor, who’s simultaneously the one we know and also very, very not. David Tennant’s not here, of course, and Camille Coduri doesn’t attempt to sound like him, but you can still see him. It’s effective, but I think I’m OK with that being the end for this character.
