UNIT #6.1

Released: 10 May 2018

Listened: 4/14/23

Sam’s back! This is the beginning of the boxed set entitled “Cyber-reality,” which evokes some obvious associations for long-time fans. However, this time we’re starting with the VR flavor of Cyber-reality. Sam wakes up as a prisoner on a ship, along with fellow prisoner Julia. Seems like a pretty basic hostage-escape scenario, tailor made for Lieutenant Sam Bishop of UNIT…or is that what’s going on here? Meanwhile, Kate and Osgood track down a lead on the Auctioneers that leads them to an abandoned warehouse containing a VR headset and a message. That kicks off the Overseer of the Auctioneers leading Kate and Osgood around on one of those Batman-style “bad guy has planted deadly devices all around and gives the heroes clues they have to solve.” Which they can, because they’re Kate and Osgood, but admittedly the puzzles aren’t particularly complex, and Kate is very unwilling to play along. She’d rather cut to the chase than follow the instructions, which makes sense. Osgood’s level of amazement at the VR headset, and need to exposition about it for the audience, probably was a lot more necessary in 2018 than in 2023, but that’s the dangers of sci-fi. Although this story has a definite conclusion, it’s not as self-contained as the previous box. And we’re getting payoff for the Auctioneers plotline. Plus more Sam, and who doesn’t want more Sam?
