After several stories with parts of the family, we’ve got everybody together this time: the Doctor, Donna, Wilf, and Sylvia, all played by their respective TV actors, and boy does it feel good to hear Bernard Cribbins. He’s a wonderful moderating influence on all of them, but especially on Sylvia. And they kinda need it this time. For reasons that aren’t entirely clear at first, they’re all pretending to be a family renovating an old manor house, supposedly haunted, for the benefit of a reality TV show and its host Justin. Which means that the Doctor and Donna have to pretend to be married, and be shmoopy at each other, and you can hear David Tennant and Catherine Tate trying so hard to make the other crack up, to the point it nearly takes you out of the story. Because it’s a reality TV show, you only get to hear the bits where Justin is filming, meaning the listener has less idea of what’s going on than usual. It turns out that the Noble family has something of a history with this house, and so does Justin. It’s a properly spooky episode, although not quite so much of a jump scare or creeping dread as spooky and uncertain. It’s a quality story, and it’s great to have the full cast.
